Chats On the Past: Sigrid Schultz, the Chicago Tribune, and the Third Reich
September 8, 2022 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
In conjunction with our exhibit “Dragon Lady” about the life of pioneering reporter Sigrid Schultz, Westport Museum will host Schultz expert Dr. David Milne of the University of East Anglia for a live discussion about the journalist’s life. Dr. Milne will present the material he has amassed on Schultz while writing her biography for Oxford University Press.
Born in Chicago in 1893, war correspondent Schultz served as Bureau Chief for Central Europe at The Chicago Tribune in the years leading up to World War II. Fluent in German, Schultz was stationed in Berlin where she witnessed the rise of the country’s National Socialism (Nazi) Party and was acutely aware of the danger the party and its leader, Adolf Hitler, posed to the world. Filing her most sensitive stories from various European cities under a pseudonym so as not to jeopardize her entrée behind the scenes of the Third Reich, Schultz was a masterful investigative reporter, and her dispatches provided critical intelligence about Germany’s wartime plans.
