Explore the Westport Museum’s newest exhibition highlighting the 20th century Westport photographer Nell Dorr. A successful female photographer at a time when few women worked and fewer still earned money for their artistic efforts, Dorr chose to elevate the female gaze rather than mimic the approach of her successful male counterparts. Using soft focus images to invite viewers into a gauzy, intimate, timeless microcosm, Dorr’s images worked to distill the precious from the prosaic. Through her lens the everyday domestic tableau was elevated to the realm of art.
“[Beauty] means all the priceless memories of my childhood. There must have been some un-beautiful days, but they are forgotten; only beauty remains.”Nell Dorr
