Oyster Boat

1 Comment May 21, 2020 virtualmuseumwestport

Catherine M. Wedmore is a 56 foot wooden oyster boat built in in West Mystic, Connecticut in 1924. This 96 year old lady still works daily harvesting oysters from Norwalk to Westport for Norm Bloom & Son/Copps Island Oysters. You can often spot her year-round  from  the shores of Compo Beach.

Taking a breath. The flowers of summer at the Westport Museum headquarters are in bloom. Sitting on the porch or in the chairs under the trees is a nice perk of museum life. Need a respite from the heat? Visit the museum where the A/C is on to keep the collections safe and patrons happy. We’d love to see you! Open Tuesday-Sunday 11am - 5pm, and now open late on Thursdays until 7pm.
An entry from the Compo House guest book reads in part: July 4th, 1856 - … Soon after sunset the friends and neighbors began to assemble at the mansion, and the grounds and in the streets adjacent to witness the display of fireworks and the illumination, with which the day was to be closed. Before the hour for firing the signal rocket had arrived, hundreds of persons had congregated. The mansion and its broad piazzas were thronged with guests. At nine our noble host fired the signal rocket, and a constant succession of rockets, lights, & fires of various kinds riveted the attention of the vast crowd for an hour and a half. One piece, the “Star of the Warrior”, terminating in brilliant fires forming the word “Compo” was the chef d’oeuvre of the exhibition and was greeted with most hearty cheers. At eleven our accomplished hostess entertained at least seventy guests in her usual graceful manner. At twelve the last of the guests of the evening had departed. The illumination was not the last attractive feature in this celebration. The House, the drive, the grounds, the graperies, stables and coach houses were all lighted up with gas manufactured on the premises, and attracted much attention. The drive was very brilliantly lighted, and was peculiarly beautiful, standing out as a beacon visible to the country for several miles about.
Did you know that admission to the museum is free this summer? Thanks to a generous grant from @cthumanities @ctvisit and other state agencies. Free activities for all too! Come on in and see authentic documents from Westport’s engagement in the Danbury Raid and battle at Compo during the Revolutionary War. #independenceday #july4th #july4thweekend #museums #history #freeadmission #familyfun #westportct #summer
At work early this fine morning revealing hidden histories of the Revolution in Westport including service of the enslaved for both sides of the War. @westporthistorymuseum’s Path of Patriots Walking Tour in partnership with our friends Greens Farms Church. @greensfarmschurchinsta #independenceday #revolution #patriots #americanhistory #truth #museumsarenotneutral
THIS is why history museums are important. It falls to us to be on the front lines of the war against lies born from an ignorance of and hostility toward fact-based history. When the schools and the governments fail, we’ll still step up. #history #enslavement #museumsarenotneutral Repost from @aluta.continua00
CT Free Summer Admission is BACK!
