Anna Louise James was born the 8th of 11 children to Willis James, who escaped enslavement on a Virginia plantation via the Underground Railroad. The family relocated to Old Saybrook during Anna's childhood. Anna enrolled at the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy and was the only woman in her graduating class of 1908 and the first African-American woman to graduate from that institute. The next year, she applied for a pharmacist license in Connecticut so that she could work alongside her brother-in-law at his pharmacy in Old Saybrook. She was granted her license and became the first African-American woman pharmacist in the state of Connecticut. In 1922, Anna took over ownership of her brother-in-law's pharmacy and renamed it the James Pharmacy, running it continually until her retirement in 1967.
