Last week, the Westport Museum for History and Culture welcomed the Thomas family to continue our joint research journey into their Westport family. Annette Thomas grew up believing her family were Native American and Portuguese with ties to Canada. A family history DNA test revealed African ancestry, but with few living relatives, there was little opportunity to find their roots. That’s where we come in.
Visit us for International Museum Day today! Free entree to all! We have three excellent exhibits as well as our local history room and gift shop. Stop in today, history is waiting for you! #westporthistory #westportct #internationalmuseumday #museumday #museum #free #visitct #visitus #historyiscool
What do the Met Gala and Westport Museum have in common? The skinny on women’s history! At this year’s Met Gala, actress Sarah Jessica Parker wore a dress designed by Christopher John Rogers that paid homage to African-American designer Elizabeth Heckley. Widely known as Mary Todd Lincoln’s dress maker, Mrs. Heckley used her skills as a designer and seamstress to self-emancipate herself from the enslavement to which she was born. Join our Women’s History tour this Saturday and learn about intersectional women’s history right here in Westport. Registration required, link to register in LinkTree or visit westporthistory.org
For International Nurses Day we’re taking a look back at the nurses of Westport’s sanitariums. Sanitariums first opened as facilities to treat tuberculosis, or contain those suffering from it, but also became popular for treating and housing those with addictive diseases such as alcoholism and those with mental diseases. Westport was the site of two sanitariums during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Walking Tours are starting THIS WEEKEND! We’re kicking off the tours with Hidden Histories: Women’s Stories this Saturday, May 14th at 2pm. This hour long tour is packed full of the impactful stories of the women of Westport. Register for your spot on the tour with the link in the LinkTree or visit westporthistory.org to check out our other tour offerings as well.
Happy Mother’s Day!
