153 years ago today on April 18, 1868, appeared this poem written by an anonymous Miss in the Westport Advertiser. So soon after the American Civil War, we have to wonder if the sad spring-time lament is an ode to friends lost during the conflict. Let us know your thoughts. Full text is as follows:

The Hurlbutt Building was a two-story building which stood approximately at the site of today’s two-story brick Gault Building between Jesup Road and Taylor Place on State Street (the Post Road). Built in the early 1860s, the Hurlbutt building housed a variety of business and public institutions over the years including the Westport Post Office and William E. Sturges and Sons’ shoe sales and repair shop. The second floor was home to the Westport Reading Room and Library Association (later becoming the Westport Library) for the first ten years of its existence until it moved to the lower level for a further 12 years when the new library building was then completed across the street.
Glancing back nearly 100 years to little Mary Pearson sitting on the porch of Wheeler House with a cat and a ball. Colorized using @myheritage_official tools. Looking forward to spending more spring days sitting on the porch. Perhaps the museum needs a cat to keep history alive? #throwbackthursday #tbt #westporthistory #westportct #museumathome #spring #catsofinstagram #cats
Elisabeth Petry hails from one of the most prominent and accomplish Black families in Connecticut. A journalist who has written extensively on her ancestors' legacy and how it fits in to social and historical movements of the state and the nation, Ms. Petry will join the Museum today at 5pm. She will discuss the work of her mother r Ann Petry, whose novel, The Street, was the first novel by an African American woman to sell over one million copies and her aunt, Anna Louise James, who was one of the two first African-American pharmacists in Connecticut. Ms. Petery will also discuss her own work, At Home Inside: A Daughter’s Tribute to Ann Petry and Can Anything Beat White? A Black Family’s Letters, which delves into her family’s prominent history by exploring their private communications with one another. Petry will share an engaging portrait of black family life from the 1890s to the early twentieth century in Connecticut. To watch live and ask questions, visit the museums Facebook page or YouTube channel tonight 4/7 at 5pm EST.
Happy Easter from the Westport Museum to all those who celebrate! Looks like it will be a great day for egg hunts and playtime outside! Stay safe and healthy everyone!
