State of Connecticut to Peter Jennings
Parchment and Ink
Westport Museum Collections

During the conflict in Westport—which was part of Fairfield at the time—locals were used for their knowledge of the area and for movement of supplies. British troops hoped to press colonists into labor to move the provisions in Danbury but were surprised to find little sympathy. Patriots did employ Peter Jennings and his horse wagon “for Service done in the Carting in the Danbury Expedition” moving ammunition and cannon to Compo and Saugatuck. Brigadier General GS Silliman issued this receipt for the payment of 4 pounds 10 shillings—roughly $700 today—as payment.
